MxD (Manufacturing times Digital) - Where innovative manufacturers forge their futures

Emerging Tech
MxD (Manufacturing times Digital) is where innovative manufacturers go to forge their futures. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, MxD equips its more than 300 members with the digital tools and expertise they need to begin building every part better than the last. MxD operates from a state-of-the-art innovation center near downtown Chicago. This segment will feature a portion of a virtual tour of MxD's 22,000-square-foot future factory floor which features some of the most advanced manufacturing equipment in the world. MxD Learn, the institute’s workforce development arm, fosters collaboration across industry, academia, government, and non-profit leadership to develop the workforce needed for digital and cybersecurity applications in manufacturing. MxD Learn has recently partnered with College of Lake County in support of Advanced Manufacturing apprenticeships, and is working to create learning programs across the nation in preparing the next generation for the jobs of the future.

What inspired you to make this project?
MxD (Manufacturing times Digital), a Department of Defense Innovation Institute, is committed to improving manufacturing competitiveness in the United States through the deployment of cutting-edge digital technologies that help manufacturers improve their operations and efficiencies. As part of this effort, MxD – in partnership with the Department of Defense – has stood up the National Center for Cybersecurity in Manufacturing; because ensuring manufacturing security against cyber threats is critical to driving manufacturing competitiveness.

In addition to the need for development of strong digital strategies and cybersecurity practices for manufacturers is the development of a workforce that can drive and support cybersecurity hygiene in manufacturing. MxD believes a holistic approach is necessary – that technology development, security awareness and workforce training must all be addressed collaboratively. MxD is committed to the development of a robust workforce development strategy because emerging technology is only as good as the workforce managing it. A critical piece of the process is the opportunity to actually do the job. Providing internship and apprenticeship opportunities benefits future workers by allowing them the chance to try out the work, ensuring a good fit, and providing workers with portable and recognized credentials while getting paid on the job. Internships and apprenticeships also benefit employers.
